When I was a kid, I was very afraid of the boogeyman that lived in my parent's basement. The basement was damp, cold, and dark... just the way boogeymen like it. Although I never saw him, thanks to my older brother, I knew him well. My brother shared many details of my awful fate, once the boogeyman got me.
The boogeyman wasn't real of course. My fear of the boogeyman, however, was very real. Children afraid to get a haircut experience that same very real fear.
